Gabe Brooks and Rachel Williams
Gabe Brooks and Rachel Williams met on Rachel’s first day at a Portland public school in January 2014. They were friends for approximately three years before beginning a romantic relationship in high school and later married.
Origins
Zoey Thomas introduced Rachel to Gabe and Darren Ross at lunch on her first day at the school following her transfer from Sunnyvale, California. Gabe asked why Rachel spoke so formally. She explained that she was autistic and that her speech pattern was one characteristic of her autism. Gabe accepted her explanation and called her “California” as they left lunch. The nickname remained part of their shared history.

Relationship Development
Rachel and Gabe remained in the same friendship group with Zoey and Darren. Their friendship lasted approximately three years before they began dating in high school. The relationship later continued into marriage.
Dynamics and Communication
Gabe and Rachel differed outwardly without requiring either person to become more like the other. Gabe was socially easy, expressive, and frequently joking; Rachel was formal, precise, quiet, and serious. His close attention to Rachel’s body language, tone, and signs of discomfort helped him recognize when she was becoming overwhelmed. Their years of friendship taught him which kinds of communication, plans, food, humor, touch, and company worked for her.
Gabe sometimes misunderstood Rachel’s communication or needs. When Rachel told him that he had hurt or upset her, he apologized without calling her oversensitive or making the harm her responsibility, then changed his behavior. He learned to account for her communication and sensory needs rather than treating those needs as a reason to exclude her or as problems he needed to fix.
Rachel recognized a familiar form of love in those adjustments. She had grown up watching Jon and Chrissie’s fierce, practical devotion: her father had built a life that honored her mother rather than accepting institutional limits on who Chrissie could be. Gabe and Rachel’s relationship differed from her parents’ marriage, but his willingness to see Rachel beyond her reputation, learn her needs, and choose her without trying to change her echoed that disability-affirming model.
Intimacy and Affection
Gabe’s affection was low-key and predictable. He gave Rachel advance notice instead of planning surprise dates or arriving unannounced. He learned her comfort foods, accepted when she needed space, and could share a room with her while each of them did something separate. During group gatherings, he could suggest leaving without turning her overload into a public event. He listened when she spoke at length about an interest, asked follow-up questions, and remembered the details.
Physical affection followed Rachel’s comfort and agreement. A hand on her shoulder, leaning together while they watched something, or simply remaining nearby could carry more meaning than a public romantic display. Gabe did not demand constant verbal reassurance or conventional performances of affection.
